i've got 2 old dogs both nearly 12 yrs, 1 a golden retriever and 1 a corgi, the retriever is on pain killers until the end of summer when the vet has advised that we have him put to sleep as he has arthritis in his spine and his hips, his muscles have started to weaken and he cant always get up when up he stands there shaking he can no longer go for walks as he cant go more than a few steps, his life long friend the corgi although no visible signs of ill health also can no longer walk more than a few steps due to being out of breath, his legs are only a couple inches long then they carry this huge barrel of a body, also he pines for the retriever, if the retriever is taken away he howls until his friend is brought back. we know henry the retriever is better off being put to sleep but is it cruel to put sam the corgi to sleep when there are no visible signs of ill helath, i just know he will pine away for his friend, they've been together since puppies and only parted for vet visits.

Well as you probably know Henry has now gone, the other two a contacorous corgi and a tempermental yorkie are now having a go at living together, we seperate them when we go out as when we're in there are a lot of teeth barred you'd think they were pit bulls in a fighting ring i've never seen 2 dogs hate each other so much, hopefully they'll eventually get on.

My heart goes out to you Sue - Parting with an old friend is such a hard and painful experience. Even though you may feel that your corgi wouldn't accept a new pal (because of the Yorkie - it might just be a clash of characters) it could help.

aww its so sad. When Macca got poorly Charley stayed at the top of the stairs pineing over Macca, and when we had to have macca put to sleep Charley did sulk and look sad for a long time, but he's ok now. Although he lost his puppyness and turned into a bit of an old man overnight but he's ok.

Its so sad though *hugs*

Oh Sue, what a dilemma you have and what a decision you will have to inevitably come to.
Would it ease the loss for you to consider introducing another puppy/dog? Just thinking that if they befriend each other in the meantime then there will be a fall back shoulder for your corgi to cry on when eventually you lose your old boy.
It may not be suitable answer but just a suggestion.. (this is coming from a nutter who owns 9 dogs!)
